A49 layby travellers move on again – here’s where in Herefordshire

Travellers who briefly set up in a Herefordshire layby appear to have moved on following a court order against them – but only to another nearby spot. A large group of travellers occupied an unauthorised camp southeast of Leominster for over a year before Herefordshire Council, which owns the site by the A49/A44 roundabout, served a court order on them requiring them to move on. As a result, some moved to the verge by Owen Way at the southern edge of Leominster’s enterprise park, while a similar number moved 4km north to a layby off the A49. RELATED NEWS: Here, Herefordshire Council again took court action against them at the end of November, and in the last few days they have moved on from here too, apparently having left little trace of their stay. But the Owen Way camp is now considerably larger with at least 12 caravans, double the number seen there ten days ago, indicating the layby group has simply relocated there also. OTHER NEWS: A spokesperson for the council said earlier that it was “reviewing the situation with relevant third parties to establish the position regarding ownership” of the Owen Way site, “to ensure the matter is managed in line with its agreed procedures for unauthorised encampments”. “Formal legal steps may be required” in this case too, they added. The extensive clean-up work required at the original, now barricaded roundabout site has yet to begin in earnest.
