The Hereford Passion is set to return for a second run on March 6 and March 7, following its previous run in 2024. The production focuses on the characters and actions leading up to the crucifixion, aiming to engage both Christians and non-Christians in a piece of theatre about the events of Holy Week. The production will be staged with a cast of performers who are drawn from the local community, including local clergy and congregation members from across the Diocese. The cathedral’s chancellor, Revd Canon James Pacey, will take on the role of Jesus for the performances, alongside his role as director. Other performers include several former teachers, such as Ben Abbott, a drama teacher who has appeared on BBC’s Mastermind with Hereford Cathedral as his specialist subject. The latest run of the Hereford Passion marks the second piece in a series of three plays that the cathedral is staging as part of the cathedral’s ‘Year of Storytelling’, celebrating 1350 years since the founding of Hereford Diocese. The final production in the series, The Hereford Mysteries, is set to be staged from October 23 to October 24, 2026. Canon Pacey commented on the upcoming performances, saying: “I am hugely excited about once again staging The Hereford Passion in our stunning cathedral. “We are keen to welcome everyone, whether they are committed Christians who want to experience a fresh take on these events, or people who might be wondering what all the fuss over Lent and Easter is about. “I am not a little daunted at playing the role of Jesus, but have been blessed with a hugely talented and committed cast from across the community and we all hope that we have produced a play that will move, challenge, and inspire.” The Hereford Passion is scheduled to take place at Hereford Cathedral on March 6 and March 7 at 7.30pm. Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £6 for children and can be purchased via the cathedral website and ticket desk on 01432 374202. The staging of the Hereford Passion has been sponsored by The Passion Trust and Hereford Cathedral Theatre Angels.
