Overnight rain on Friday left an area of the Edgar Street pitch waterlogged and described as ‘dangerous’. The Bulls were looking for a first league win in eight games following their 1-1 draw at Chester in midweek and expected a good crowd and sold-out hospitality. Ammonds told the club’s website: “I’m absolutely gutted, is the reality of the situation. “We’ve been left with no choice. We had Football League qualified official come here this morning to just have a look as a precaution more than anything. “There has been more rain overnight than we expected and there’s an area of the pitch, it was standing water on it, but the top of the surface is so spongy and so soft. It’s just dangerous. “We think there’s a real issue with the drain in that particular area, 95% of the pitch is perfectly fine, but there is an area that’s just really dangerous and we just can’t take that risk.” Hereford also had to postponed their planned game against Macclesfield due to a waterlogged pitch earlier this month. Ammonds said that there has been a ‘perfect storm’ of problems with the drainage system coming to the end of its life and the pitch impacted by floodlight work in the summer. “The heavy equipment that went on the pitch in that corner, but we’ve almost got the perfect storm where the drains is coming into the life,” he added. “The water’s not getting away. It’s sitting in that corner and the problem we’ve got is it’s not been dry enough. It’s just consistently wet.” Ammonds added that the club have done work on the pitch and installed two new drains. He also paid tribute to the groundsman who he said was ‘ “It’s definitely improved,” added Ammonds. “It’s just not had the chance to dry out enough. “What I don’t want is people to start being critical of anyone really. This is just completely out of our hands. “We’ve got a look at what we do in the coming weeks to try and make it even better or improve it even more, because it definitely has improved. “We’ve got to try and do more and we’ve got to try and get it sorted. We’re hopeful the work has been done already, that we’ll start to reap a benefit, but we’ve got to try and do more and we’ve got to try and get it sorted, because what we don’t want is home games off. “We had already kind of committed to the decision to get the drainage replaced next summer anyway, because we’ve got to do a full a full pitch refurbishment next summer anyway. “So actually, it was a good opportunity for us to do everything at the same time. It will be costly, obviously, but it’s got to be done, we think, and there’s no point doing the top of the pitch and making that look nice if the drainage underneath isn’t working.”
