Hereford FC ease past Merthyr Town 3-0 on home soil
First-half goals from Lewis Hudson, Mikey Lane and Matt Preston secured Hereford FC a convincing 3-0 win over border rivals Merthyr Town. The Bulls controlled large portions of the contest, while Merthyr arrived aiming to cling to a playoff position and showed early intent as Jordon Garrick burst through the hosts’ rearguard, only to be denied by a crucial block from Matt Preston and Hereford goalkeeper Theo Richardson. Tom Handley tested the Bulls’ resolve soon after, driving at the defence before firing over, and Aaron Downes sought a response for the visitors after their midweek defeat at Kidderminster, seeing Freddy Willcox’s attempt blocked and Kyle Howkins head over at the other end.
The home side struck in the 13th minute through Hudson, who capitalised on Harrison Sohna’s free-kick when the ball dropped to the returning skipper and he dispatched it into the net. Sohna, back from a three-match ban, then played a prominent part as his corner was headed down into Mikey Lane’s path, though the midfielder’s first-time strike was blocked by a resilient Merthyr defence. The visitors pressed forward in search of an equaliser, and Garrick found himself in a promising position after a sustained spell of interpassing, but Freddie Willcox read the danger superbly to clear in the nick of time.
Willcox continued to influence proceedings in attack, this time from distance, his shot from around 30 yards flashing just wide of the far post as Jaimie Cogman was forced to consider the danger. Hereford’s second goal arrived on 23 minutes when Sohna delivered a corner that caused chaos in the six-yard box before Mikey Lane swept the ball home at the far post to put the Bulls two ahead. Merthyr’s hopes of a revival received another setback moments later when the referee rejected a penalty appeal as Harry Tustin sprinted through on goal and was brought down inside the area, much to the visitors’ frustration.
Merthyr persisted, and Handley’s hopeful strike skimmed past the post after a half-chance presented itself. Just before the break, Hereford added a decisive third as a throw-in was worked wide and Preston found space to strike with the outside of his boot from roughly 30 yards, the ball curling beyond Cogman’s reach to make it 3-0. The hosts headed into the interval with a comfortable cushion, while Merthyr heads drooped with the sense that some stubborn resistance would be required to salvage something from the match.
As the second half began, merthyr responded with renewed intensity. Keiran Evans fired a testing effort at Richardson, who held firm, and Lee Lucas then ballooned a effort over the bar as the visitors tried to force a route back into the game. Hereford, for their part, remained dangerous on the break, with George Munday forcing a save from Cogman on a rare foray forward. The stop-start nature of the second period continued, with Sohna forcing a close-range stop from Cogman that preserved the two-goal margin, and Merthyr’s substitute Tate Xavier-Jones sent a long-range drive wide of the target with eight minutes remaining as they sought a late rally.
In the end, Hereford’s solid first-half performance proved decisive, and Lane finally had the final say as the Bulls closed out the victory. The result strengthened Hereford’s position in the table and left Merthyr with further work to do in pursuit of their playoff ambitions, the home side’s disciplined display and clinical finishing providing the platform for a deserved three points.
