Hereford suffer away defeat after Campbell sale

Lewis Hudson opened the scoring for Paul Caddis’ side but the hosts hit back with goals from Ben Darby and Joel Amado. It was Hereford sixth game in all competitions without a win – a run which includes four defeats. Before the game Hereford announced the sale of Campbell for an undisclosed fee to National League South side Hemel Hempstead Town. In a statement released by the club chairman Chris Ammonds said that the club had turned down ‘several’ bids from Hemel for their striker. However, Campbell requested to leave the Bulls for the southern side as the contract on offer could secure him with ‘longer-term security’ than his deal with Hereford. Ammonds said: “Over the past couple of days, further talks have taken place and yesterday we agreed a deal with Hemel Hempstead that we feel properly reflects Rem’s value to us at this time. The deal sees us receive a healthy fee up front, with the potential for a further payment should Hemel Hempstead achieve promotion this season. “While it’s clear the timing of Rem’s sale is not ideal, and we were under no financial pressure to sell, in the end, we felt it was sensible to take a pragmatic view in this case in terms of whether we should retain a player who had expressed an interest in a move elsewhere.” Nottingham Forest youngster Cormac Daly was given a start on his debut for the Bulls, while fellow new arrival Cherif Yaya had a place on the bech. The Bulls got off to the prefect start with a ninth-minute lead after Harley Hamilton’s pass sliced open the home defence, allowing skipper Lewis Hudson to darts through and beat the goalkeeper. Manchester-based hosts were behind for just four minutes when Darby rifled his side level with a low shot past the goalkeeper. Debutant Daly made an impact before the break picking out striker Andy Williams, but his header was well saved by Curzon goalkeeper Callum Hawkins. Hereford finished the first half strongly and Justin Donawa saw his half-volley on the edge of the box fly just wide. The Nash responded and were only denied a second goal by the width of the crossbar, through Jordan Richards’ powerful effort. That was a warning sign for a second Nash goal, which came on the hour mark courtesy of an Amado half-volley following a quickly taken corner. Paul Caddis’ side went in search of an equaliser and Daly saw his effort deflected wide. In a grandstand finish the Bulls were denied a injury time equaliser, as goalkeeper Hawkins tipped over a ferocious volley from Aaron Skinner. Hereford’s assistant manager Adam Rooney also went close at the death, but his effort fell narrowly wide. Hereford: Richardson, Skinner, Quansah, Roberts, Hudson, Hamilton, Mafuta (Rooney 87), Martin (Yaya 67), Donawa (Pavey 67), Daly, Williams Unused subs: Lewis, Preston, Howkins, Cisse
