James May says new Grand Tour will be ‘fantastic’

The TV presenter starred on both shows for over two decades, along with co-hosts Richard Hammond and Oxfordshire resident Jeremy Clarkson. Their time together and on The Grand Tour came to an end with a final special in 2024 entitled One For The Road. It saw the trio venture across Zimbabwe and Botswana in Africa, returning to the site of their original 2007 Top Gear special. Speaking to Metro, he said: “It will be carrying on. The Grand Tour continues. “We’re stepping away as the hosts, but Prime will be continuing it. So I can’t wait to sit on my own chair and watch somebody else do it. That’s amazing.” Mr May’s other previous show, Top Gear, has been off air since presenter Freddie Flintoff was involved in a serious crash back in December 2022. Mr May said: “When we stopped doing Top Gear, I thought, and in fact I did say this to quite senior people at the BBC because they asked me, it’s long overdue for a rethink. “It needs a new format or a new attitude. “We’re quite old, and despite my attempts to be a contemporary human being, I accept that our view of the subject is probably a little bit dated. “So, it does need a complete rethink, but it’s still a fascinating subject and it’s more interesting actually than it’s been since the car was invented probably. “I don’t quite know how you do it, but it needs some young people with a young attitude, and this is going to happen with The Ground Tour eventually. “It’ll be something completely different from what we did. I don’t even know if it’ll be called the same thing, but they will do a new show with new people who are younger than us and have a more contemporary take on what cars are actually about.” When asked if he would be watching the show when it eventually comes out, Mr May added: “Oh god, yes. Put it on, yeah. “I’m going to watch a car show where I don’t know what happened. Yeah. It’s going to be fantastic.” The TV star was speaking to the Oxford Mail ahead of his Explorers – The Age of Discovery Tour live show at the New Theatre in Oxford on Tuesday, October 21.
