The former Top Gear and The Grand Tour star purchased The Windmill in Asthall for around £1,000,000 last year. Since then, the boozer near Burford has been renovated and renamed The Farmer’s Dog, with doors opening for the first time back in August of 2024. One rule which has existed at the west Oxfordshire watering hole since its inception is that the produce served has to be 100 per cent British. The Farmer’s Dog pub in Asthall, Oxfordshire. (Image: Ed Nix) This has now seen Mr Clarkson ban a popular food item from the pub, with birthday cakes now off the list. A patron had asked if they could bring a celebratory cake along with them for a previously planned visit to The Farmer’s Dog. The response issued by staff was polite but refused the customer’s wish nonetheless, with Mr Clarkson’s strict policy outlined. Even on special occasions, the ingredients used in the 65-year-old’s pub must come from within 16 miles, including birthday cakes. According to The Sun, the message read: “As part of our commitment to back British farming, we kindly ask that only 100 per cent British food products are brought into the pub, this sadly includes birthday cakes.” The Farmer’s Dog pub featured heavily in the most recent series of Clarkson’s Farm, which was released on Prime Video across May and June this year. Filming on the upcoming series five has wrapped as per Mr Clarkson himself, with episodes now in post-production ahead of an expected 2026 release.
