Landmark church goes on the market after plans for reuse axed

St Nicholas’ Church, which sits on the edge of Barton Road and Victoria Street, closed for worship on May 1, after congregation numbers dwindled. Encore Enterprises, formerly known as Hereford Music Service, had hopes of using the Grade-II listed building as a community venue. However, Hereford Diocese, which is responsible for the church, confirmed that the sale to Encore would not go through, as “regrettably” the board of Encore had withdrawn from the process, citing challenges with planning. Now, the church is on the market with chartered surveyors, Bruton Knowles, who say it has a “variety” of future uses. The sale includes both the church, which is believed to have been built around 1842, and St Nicholas’ House, which has been used as a church hall, with two large meeting spaces. The agents say suitable uses may include: a place of worship for other Christian bodies, community facilities, a music centre, a museum, or an office or housing, subject to meeting planning requirements. Read more: Describing the layout and components of the building, the agents said: “Constructed of sandstone under a roof of Welsh slate and loosely follows Early English Gothic design, with a square bell tower. “The plan of the Church is a parallelogram with a tower at the West, and chancel and vestry at the East, projecting beyond each end. “The walls are built of hammer-dressed stone, the buttresses being tooled. In the centre of the tower is the West entrance, forming a vestibule, in which steps lead up to a ringing chamber. Stay updated with all the latest Herefordshire news that matters to you! The extension to the north side of the Tower incorporates a Choir Vestry, WCs, Store and Flower Room.” “Expressions of interest” are invited on the whole property initially, but separate offers for either the church or St Nicholas’ House may be considered. The church itself is priced at £275,000, whilst the price of the meeting hall is given as £175,000.
