Railway station step-free access plans scrapped

In May 2024, Ledbury was named as one of 50 stations where feasibility work would be completed to decide whether it was possible to provide step-free access to the station. However, following the July 2024 general election, which saw Labour replace the Conservatives in leading the country, the DfT has announced almost two dozen unfeasible projects. A spokesperson for the Department of Transport said: “The previous government announced feasibility work on 50 stations without indicating how the delivery of such schemes would be funded. “This government is committed to a rigorous approach and only making commitments we believe are affordable and would represent value for money to passengers and taxpayers. “As such, ministers have carefully considered the findings of the initial feasibility work and have decided which will progress.” The decisions were based on a series of criteria, including where upgrades would benefit significant numbers of passengers, the presence of third-party funding contributions, pre-existing technical development work, and spreading the projects across Wales, Scotland and different parts of England. As a result, eight stations will progress directly to delivery, a further 23 will progress to detailed design, while 19 projects will not progress and will be scrapped. Ledbury station is one of the 19 which will not progress. “This approach recognises the limited funding government can make available to fund accessibility upgrades, as well as the significant benefits they bring to local communities. “A future round of Access for All may be funded as part of the next spending review, and this could provide an opportunity to fully or partially fund accessibility upgrades at other stations across Britain. “The process for identifying potential projects has not yet been decided, although we have committed to reforming the Access for All programme as we move toward the establishment of Great British Railways.”
