I’d read some time ago that Beefy Boys had launched their “Phat Boy Platter” in 2023, and it was initially designed to be part of a food challenge, with anyone managing to scoff two burgers, bacon fries, pastrami fries, a mega mac balls, corn, and a choice of wings, receiving a celebratory mug. Feeling slightly inspired and absolutely starving, my partner and I decided to give it a try- though I don’t think either of us were under the impression that we’d win any awards for our attempt. I’d love to say that I completed this on my own, or that I even completed it. It’s probably important to preface this by saying that I won’t make it onto the restaurant’s wall of fame, but I’m sure many others also haven’t. The platter looks ever so slightly different to what was advertised in 2023, with the main difference being that pastrami fries have now been swapped for truffle fries, corn has been demoted in place of a ‘slaw’, and you now get not only wings, but a choice of tenders too. Read more: Although I’d probably favour a Pizza Boy, I settled on a classic Chipotle Boy, as did my partner. I let him choose the wings, which came soaked in Buffalo sauce and blue cheese sauce. Meanwhile, for the tenders, we went for a garlic and parmesan option, complete with a herby mayonnaise and lemon pepper. For me, the star of the show was definitely the burger; this was closely seconded by the mac and cheese balls, which were a herby crumbed sphere of pure comfort food. The vast platter proved a brilliant taste-testing of some items I’d never thought to order before, including the truffle fries, which were oozing with a rich saltiness, and the tenders, which were a brilliant addition to contrast the beef burger. Although we didn’t manage too much of it, given that we left defeated with a mountain of fries still on the plate, the slaw was a brilliant side accompaniment, and I wasn’t previously aware that this could be ordered. It had a brilliant creamy indulgence, but still retained a fresh feel. The platter is definitely value for money, and only equates to ever so slightly more than ordering two burgers and two sides each, and given the generous portion of fries, slaw, and extra chicken, it’s certainly a good deal. Having not been to their restaurant for nearly a year, the one thing I was strongly reminded of is the incredibly quick service, even on a busy evening where the upstairs area is crammed full with families and friends. Our waitress was lovely, and our food was brought over extremely quickly, despite the vast quantity of it.
