Harrison Sohna signs for Woking after turning down Hereford offer as charity-friendly friendly announced
The 23-year-old Harrison Sohna has moved on from Cheltenham Town and signed with Woking, ending a brief spell with Hereford United. Sohna left Cheltenham in February and impressed enough during a short stint to trigger talks over this season. Although Hereford had been keen to keep him, the midfielder rejected their offer and will now pursue full-time football under former England striker Jermaine Defoe at Woking. Sohna’s path through football has seen him come through Aston Villa’s youth system before joining Sunderland, where he trained alongside Defoe, and later moved to Cheltenham. It is understood that Hereford’s early interest will still generate compensation for the clubs involved, given Sohna’s age and the circumstances of the transfer, with Woking likely to contribute a compensation package to Hereford as part of the deal.
Woking’s director of football, Jody Brown, spoke warmly about Sohna’s move. He explained that Sohna first attracted attention in January while he was with Cheltenham, noting that the club could not act at the time but had been impressed by how he fared on loan at Hereford, where he played regularly and delivered performances at a solid level. Brown recalled that Sohna had previously been in the Sunderland squad with Jermaine Defoe and identified him as a player who could add value to the Woking group. “Left-footed, full of energy, a dead-ball specialist, able to operate in deeper areas to help build play, and equally comfortable as an eight with forward runs and a goal threat,” Brown said. The signing has been welcomed as a chance for Woking to bolster their midfield options with a player who can influence both possession and attacking forays from central roles.
Meanwhile, Hereford are preparing for next season with a reminder that change continues to ripple through the squad. The Bulls will come up against another former player in Eno Nto, who has agreed a one-year contract with fellow National League North side Bedford Town. Nto’s time at Hereford was hampered by a series of injuries, limiting his chances to feature regularly. The 23-year-old had most recently been with Northern Irish outfit HW Welders, where he found the back of the net six times in ten appearances, showcasing his capability to make an impact when fit.
In other news surrounding the club’s upcoming campaign, Hereford will welcome Worcester City to Edgar Street on Tuesday, July 21 for the Bulls’ first home friendly of the summer. All money raised from the match will be donated equally between St Michael’s Hospice in Hereford and St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester. Hereford chairman Chris Ammonds expressed pride in hosting the fixture and stressed the charitable importance of the event. “The work both charities undertake is remarkable and profoundly important for countless families across Herefordshire and Worcestershire,” Ammonds said. “When Worcester City approached us about making this game a reality, we were keen to support the initiative. Hosting the match is something we are very proud of, and we hope supporters from both clubs will turn out in force to back the two charities while backing their teams on the night.”
St Michael’s Hospice chief executive Matt Fellows welcomed the announcement, highlighting the chance for fans to contribute to vital local care services. “We’re excited to stage this match between Hereford FC and Worcester City. Both clubs have loyal, passionate followings, and we anticipate a strong turnout,” Fellows said. “We know many supporters have benefited from the care provided by St Michael’s and St Richard’s, and this event offers an opportunity to support their preferred team while supporting their local hospice, too.”
