Dad-of-one Cole Porter, 33, said: “We knew it was serious due to the amount of police and emergency services here. “It’s absolutely tragic, those guys just out doing their jobs and now one of them isn’t going back to their family. “It looked a horrendous scene and your heart just goes out to all involved really.” Another local resident, who wished to remain anonymous, added: “It’s really shocking and there’s been a lot of damage to the property. “It must have gone really far into the building as well, the emergency services did a good job but it’s just extremely sad a man has lost his life.” Leader of Herefordshire Council, Jonathan Lester, said that although the man was not a direct employee of the council, he was “part of our wider council family”. “On behalf of Herefordshire Council, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and colleagues at FCC Environment where he worked,” Cllr Lester said. “We also send our thoughts to the two other individuals injured in the incident and wish them a full recovery.”Cllr Lester thanked both the emergency services, council staff, and responders who attended the incident in “extremely difficult circumstances”. “We will continue to work closely with our partners to assess the situation and enable the continuing response and investigation,” he added. Cllr Smith-Winnard offered her “sincere condolences” to the families of those involved, and asked residents of the town to avoid Mill Street and the surrounding area whilst the major operation continued.
