Trade for breeding ewes stands at 310p despite reduction in hoggets

The sale attracted 357 prime hoggets, which drew significant interest from buyers. Trade was robust across all types, with weights suitable for export proving particularly popular. Hoggets from WJ Lewis & Son achieved a top price of 345p per kilo, with 32kg Cheviot hogs going for 340p per kilo. E Williams from Neath set the pace for heavier hoggets, with 67kg animals reaching £198.32, equivalent to 296p per kilo. Increased buyer interest hinted in reports suggested higher numbers could have been moved to advantage. It was a more lively affair in the cull section, with all types £8 to £15 dearer on the week. Top of the lot were ewes from PG Amphlett, fetching £218. Leaner and hill types sold between £125 and £150, while more plain ewes went for £60-£110. A dispersal on behalf of Mr H Morgan from Hay on Wye saw strong interest in Texel x Beltex ewes. Buyers were notably keen on mature ewes, with prices peaking at £310, £305, and £300. Yearlings and two-year-olds fetched up to £265. At the sale of feeding bulls, store cattle, and cull cows held on Friday 30th January, a solid trade was seen. Heifers reached a high of 620.7p per kilo and £3,080, cull cows up to £2,920, and steers up to £2,980. The cull cow trade was described as very sharp, with the top price of £2,920 achieved for an 890kg Limousin x cow from AE Jones. A shortage of feeding bulls left several buyers wanting more. Despite the short supply, a run of purebred Limousin Bulls from RW Williams & Co, Glansawdde, sold well, hitting 487p per kilo. Store cattle also sold well. Round bale hay topped at £61 per bale, with small bale straw fetching £5.50. Brecon’s next cattle sale is expected on Friday 27th February, with entries closing on Thursday 19th February at 5pm. Brecon also invited entries for the coming weeks, urging interested parties to get in touch. Their 18th annual show and sale of show potential cattle will be held on February 14.
