West Mercia Police has received reports in rural villages in the county, including in Moreton-on-Lugg, where individuals approached residents offering repair work, and then allegedly “overcharged for poor-quality or unnecessary services”. Posting on Neighbourhood Matters, PCSO Rachael Mahoney urged residents to share the information with friends, family, and neighbours. According to West Mercia Police, rogue traders are individuals who pose as legitimate tradespeople, but “exploit” homeowners, often targeting the elderly or vulnerable. The individuals or groups may offer urgent repairs that aren’t needed, start work without proper agreements, and pressure residents into making quick decisions. The individuals may use “high-pressure tactics” to create a sense of fear or urgency, and offer cheap deals that quickly escalate in cost. When trying to spot a rogue trader, the force advises looking out for unsolicited visits offering work, individuals insisting on cash payments, and those who may refuse to show identification or provide company details.
