Members of the 124 (Hereford) Squadron Royal Air Force Air Cadets (RAFAC) supported Remembrance activities both locally and nationally, including ceremonies, sponsored walks, and the creation of a Garden of Remembrance at Hereford Cathedral. On November 6, Fg Offr Hannah Price, Fl Sgt Danny Rees, Cdt Cpl Eva Wood, and Cadet Bailey Grayhurst travelled to London to open the Air Cadet plot at the Westminster Abbey Field of Remembrance. The field was opened by Queen Camilla, who spoke with the group and reflected on the young lives lost during the Second World War. On November 11, 18 cadets and four staff members took part in the Great Western Railway Remembrance Day service at Paddington Station. Cadets helped move poppy wreaths from trains to the GWR War Memorial on Platform 1, with wreaths collected from Hereford, Ledbury, and Colwall. The service was particularly meaningful this year, marking the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and the 200th anniversary of the railways. The whole day proved most memorable and at time emotional. Alongside Platform 1 was the GWR Victoria Cross train – named after Herefordshire’s only born VC winner, Alan Leonard Lewis. Down the side of the train are the names of more than 3,000 men of the GWR who lost their lives in war. The day brought home the scale, commitment, and sacrifice of so many.
